Types of Nursing Licenses/Certifications

Registered Nurse (RN) License: This is the basic license required to practice nursing in most jurisdictions. RNs must pass the NCLEX-RN exam to become licensed.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License (or Licensed Vocational Nurse - LVN): LPNs/LVNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of RNs or physicians. They must pass the NCLEX-PN exam to become licensed. Some universities and community colleges honor LVN to BSNor LVN to ADN bridge programs.

Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Certification: CNAs provide basic care to patients, such as assisting with activities of daily living, taking vital signs, and helping patients with mobility. Certification requirements vary by state but typically involve completing a state-approved training program and passing a competency exam. Becoming a CNA can jumpstart your healthcare career and prepare you to get-to-know the nursing flow while in college.
